Workers and the World Unite
We face the worst economic crisis in years and a climate crisis that is already wreaking havoc, from a polar vortex-induced blackout in Texas to raging fires in California. Both crises are caused by capitalism: an economic system that prioritizes private profits for a few over the basic needs of the vast majority. Capitalist bosses leave us overworked and underpaid, our air and water poisoned, and our weather and food systems spiraling into chaos. All of these crises are devastating to working-class people and communities of color.
Those who are least responsible for the crises are paying the cost: suffering from pollution, astronomically high utility bills, contaminated water and more. We must put an end to business as usual and transform the economy into one that prioritizes the public good. We need a Green New Deal to transform our energy system, rebuild our decaying public infrastructure, and create millions of good union jobs in the process. With good union jobs, high-quality infrastructure, and a planet safe from climate chaos, we will not just survive but thrive, and create a better world for all.
To win transformative demands, we have to defeat the capitalists who make billions from a status quo that leaves millions of people suffering. Capitalists will do anything they can to keep their profits, no matter how much environmental destruction they cause. We do not have billions of dollars, but we do have billions of people, most of whom want a fairer, more sustainable world. But wanting it is not enough. It is only by building collective power that we can beat the bosses, and rebuild our economy and ecosystem. How? The same way ordinary workers and communities beat them to win the original New Deal: mass, militant labor organizing that fueled an explosion in unions and strikes.
Americans are overwhelming pro-union, but membership is at an all-time low. Why? Because workers have a hard time forming or joining a union. Right now, US labor law essentially states that if you try to join or start a union, bosses and companies can do whatever they want in response. Remember the voter suppression tactics we saw in the 2020 election.? When it comes to union elections, those are not just standard, they are legal. The PRO Act fixes this. Bosses know that a reinvigorated labor movement has the power to reshape the economy and win a Green New Deal, the same way labor won the original New Deal. That is why they spent the last 90 years poising our labor laws against workers, and why we are fighting to Pass The PRO Act and make our labor laws work for workers.
Uniting to Win the PRO Act Will End the “Climate vs Labor” Myth
The most effective attacks on the climate movement pit it against the labor movement and jobs. While the actual conflicts between the two are overstated, we cannot afford any division in our ranks during the most important battle of our lifetimes. When forced to choose between job stability today or climate chaos tomorrow, workers will choose the former even if they do not want to. But we do not have to choose. The policies for better workplaces and for a better world are one and the same. The Green New Deal is a better deal for workers and the planet.
